bullet  General Notes:

An article in the 30 Aug 1904 edition of the Winona Republican-Herald stated "Chas. Drugan has a handsome new barber pole."
----------------------------------

WINONA BARBERS DON FLU MASKS
Barbers at the Schlitz Hotel shop were wearing influenza masks in order to avoid coming in contact with influenza while shaving customers.

Charles Drugan, proprietor of the shop, believes it to be a timely move and declares that wearing the masks keeps the barbers from contracting the disease and at the same time protects the patron. It is believed that other local barber shops will adopt the same plan.

14 DEATH OF CHARLES DRUGAN

Mr. Drugan had been a barber for 45 years. He followed his trade in the business districts, Saturdays and school days at the college. Death was due to pneumonia after an illness of a few days. He was born in Trempealeau County, Wisconsin, and had been in Winona for 29 years. Survivors are his wife; one son, Seymour, Chicago; one grandson, Robert; two brothers, Joseph, Trempealeau, and Andrew, Whitehall; three nieces and four nephews. • He was buried on 22 February 1939 in the Woodlawn Cemetery in Winona, MN.

Charles' gravestone has his birth year as 1877 but the death certificate indicates March 27, 1878. My feelings are that information on a death certificate is usually supplied by the deceased's survivors on the day of the death or very shortly thereafter and who are emotionally distraught at the time. The engraving for the gravestones are usually approved by the survivors at some time later when they may have a better understanding of the importance of the correct dates and locations. In addition, the 1880 US Census record when he was only three years old indicates a birth year of 1877. Therefore, in my opinion, the gravestone is probably correct. His true birth date is likely March 27, 1877. (Brian L. Lightfoot)
