"Lorense came home from France wounded. He was at the Battle of Marne and received two medals for heroism. Bertie was a captain, but never left the states. He was stationed in Texas somewhere and trained soldiers for the war."

"Siggi leased the land from Martha, as Lorense was not able to work because of his injuries."

(Martha's son William:) "Martha went and stayed with Billy in Minnesota several times. They had a beautiful big home, as he had become very successful. When they came to visit us once, they pulled up in a big black Cadillac sedan, and brought us all beautiful gifts. I still have a crystal vase on my mantle that Billy gave me. Sven and he got along very well and wrote to each other for years."
