Names of County Pioneers Flavor Mile Bluff's History

(Ed. Note: The following article by Mrs. Henry Schoeder of Reeder, N. Dak., formerly Evelyn Murphy of Mauston, concludes the series on Mile Bluff school history. It was at the suggestion of Mrs. Schoeder, a former student there, that the present members of the school and its teacher, Mrs. Virginia Brown, have collected the information presented last week by the students and this week by the Mrs. Schoeder, herself.)

How many people around Mauston realize that the Mile Bluff school is really one of the city's oldest landmarks?

From the earliest records, we find that the old school house was a frame building and it stood across the road from the present one.

Many families comprised the district from its very beginning; Gregory, McNown, Smith, Ryan, Craine, Maloney, Train, Murphy, Stewart, Stevens, Dockstader and Wermuth. Early teachers include Rhodina Train, Grace Gulverson, Sarah Seckerson, Linderman Wright, Marcia Ackerman and George McNown.

As the need arose, a larger and better schoolhouse was erected in 1882. It is still in use after 75 years. The first teacher was G. A. Temple, with 26 pupils enrolled.

We are very grateful to Emil Wermuth, Bridget Larkin, Mrs. John McNown and Sophia Norton for much of the information concerning the present building and its activities through the years.

Here I would like to name the teachers that have taught this school: G. A. Temple, Anna Lavin, E. Dodge, Clara Long, E. E. Darren, Ada Hull, Clara McNown, Katie Murphy, Lillian Robinson, Jennie Murphy, Nellie Carter, Iva Shanabrook, Iva Tremain, Grace Baldwin, Agnes Jennings, Dieda Robinson, Ora Boorman, Theda Carter, Will Tiedman, Rose Murphy, Rebecca Murphy, Elizabeth Hamilton, Mary E. Larkin, W. W. Dyer, Bertha Foote, Anna Rosenbush, C. H. Potter, Harriet Dalton, Emily Machovee, Mary Kieffer, Bertha Tiederman, Beatrice Fletcher, Alice Baldwin, Mildren Sherman, Claire Ferguson, Magdalene Pfiefer, Margaret Petrowitz, Katherine Bohen, Georgia McNutt, Mary Vlna, Antoinette McIntyre, Harry Hanson, Helen Gardner, Mildred Thompson, Persis Ackerman, Lorraine Sumiec, Leona Robinson, Avancile Maxwell, Blanche Hepp and Virginia Brown.

I visited this school in February and I couldn't help but think how well it has been preserved. On the outside, it's the same as the day it was built, but now it has an oil heating system instead of the old wood stove. I also noticed a new floor, seats, electric lights and inside toilets.

The records of the school have all been kept since it was built, which I think is remarkable, so that today, in 1959, we may salute the memory of our predecessors.

Iva was baptized at the Catholic church in Trempealeau in October but the year is missing on a copy of the certificate. She seems to have taken the name Elizabeth. It says Elizabeth Iva Shanabrook, born 17 August 1871, and baptized 1 October .... Her sponsors were Elizabeth Drugan and Baites Good...

On 29 July 1917, Iva was working at Marshall Field's in Chicago for $10 a week. She apparently had left her husband Phillip.

In a letter dated 14 Aug 1919, her mother, Mary Keeffe Shanabrook writes her daughter, Iva: "that you were wise to leave...[the abusive husband].

In 1930, she was a member of the Madisonville Methodist Episcopal Church of Cincinnati but she was leaving and transferring to a new church.
