General Notes:
(Source: Notes from Mary Adams Klipple) David was a photographer as well as a carpenter. I remember my grandmother Minnie telling my mom how he had gone to the O'Keeffe's house to try to take pictures and met his future bride. I have Xerox copies of pictures with DAVID SCOTT SHANABROOK, PHOTOGRAPHER, Greencastle, Pennsylvania.
He was rumored to be an alcoholic. His Wisconsin family did not know when he died or where he was buried.
My husband Gary wondered if he was up in Canada to escape the Union Draft [during the Civil War]. He says a lot of people went there to escape the war. His mom, Susannah Rife, came from a long line of Mennonite ministers so it seems reasonable. There also would have been distant cousins from Groffdale: Rifes and Groffs in Canada.
I wonder if his middle name Scott was his Grandma Elizabeth's maiden name, but I can't ascertain that. There is a David Scott living near Elizabeth and Israel and Susan in Hamilton Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania, and David Scott is a famous pioneer and military man from that area, but I can't get a direct connection yet. I can't find that maiden name yet. --------------------------------------------
D. S. Shanabrook, photographer, was brought home Monday from the Pennsylvania hospital in Philadelphia where he has been for treatment. Recently he had a light stroke. He was accompanied home by his daughter, Mrs. Anna Tyndall, and daughter, Miss Tyndall of Richmond, Virginia, and his nephew, Mr. E. P. Shanabrook of Blain, who went for him Sunday. We hope for his recovery.

Marriage Notes:
David took the young catholic Mary just a few miles from Canada across the Saint Lawrence River to Ogdensburgh, NY where they were married in a Methodist church. ------------------------------------------
David and Mary split-up and lived separately sometime after 1885. It appears that Mary and the children remained in Wisconsin while David returned to Pennsylvania to continue his work as a photographer and artist. He moved to Perry County, Pennsylvania where most of his family was living.
As early as the 1895 Wisconsin State Census, Mary was listed as the Head of the Household but on the 1900 US Census, both David and Mary indicated that they were married for 36 years. However, on the 1910 US Census Mary indicated that she was widowed while David was still living in Pennsylvania. On the 1920 US Census, Mary continued to indicate that she was widowed. ---------------------------------------------
