bullet  General Notes:

William consistently misreported his age on the census forms. Assuming that his birth date was 19 Dec 1878 which matches the 1900 US Census that required a birth month and year, then in 1910 he reported his age as 3 years too old (34 instead of 31); in 1920 he reported his age as 3 years too old (44 instead of 41); in 1930 he reported his age as 2 years too young (49 instead of 51).
-------------------------------------------------

William traveled and lived in multiple places during his life. He was born in Missouri but within 5 years his parents were living in Winona, Minnesota. In another 10 years his parents were living in Mauston, Wisconsin.

The 1900 US Census shows him married but living back at home with his mother in Trempealeau, Wisconsin.

By 1918, he has moved once again and is working as a carpenter for a coal company in Logan, West Virginia. By 1920, he moved once again back to York, Pennsylvania where the census records show him living with his 2nd wife.

This is where things get a little confusing. The 1930 US Census shows a William H. Shanabrook living back in York, Pennsylvania with his wife, Margaret, and one son, Edwin. But there is another 1930 US Census record showing another William H. Shanabrook in Hazard, Kentucky where the census strangely records him as "single" and there is no mention of his 2nd wife or son. I am sure that the census from Hazard, Kentucky is the correct William because his brother Warren was also living in Hazard, Kentucky. In addition, he registered for the WW II Draft in 1942 at Hazard, KY.

So, was William enumerated twice in 1930 ...once in York, Pennsylvania with a wife and son, and then a second time in Hazard, Kentucky where he listed himself as single? Maybe the marriage fell completely apart and he just had to get away from it all. Or are the 1920 and 1930 US Census records of a William Shanabrook in York, Pennsylvania the wrong William? Both of those records do list his birth location as Pennsylvania instead of Missouri yet the 1910 US Census absolutely shows him living with the two sons. So it does indeed look as if in 1930 William just abandoned the wife and son back in York, Pennsylvania and moved to Hazard, Kentucky declaring himself single.

The 1940 US Census shows him still living in Hazard, Kentucky with his brother, Warren, and both of them are shown as single. In 1952, he died in Portland, Oregon where I suspect he was staying with one of his sons during his final years.
