  General Notes:

There is a little confusion about the names and nicknames of the daughters of Margaret especially since at least one of them was not named when the birth filing was made with the county clerk.

Elizabeth Herman was also known as "Bessie". Researcher Robert Westphal also shows an additional alias of "Margaret Elizabeth Herman" but strangely he gives her a birth date of 1 Nov 1901 which would seem to be the approximate birth date of "Mary B. Herman" as calculated from the 1905 Wisconsin State census and the 1910 and 1920 US Census. I have found no source in which Elizabeth or Bessie was also called Margaret.

The 1957 obituary for their mother stated that she was survived by 4 daughters:
1. Mary and husband Frank Soltif
2. Bessie and husband John Kalnowitz (her 1st husband was Leslie Lakey)
3. Beulah and husband Mike Harnung
4. Ruby (Ruth) and husband Jack Prak

The 5th daughter, Gladys had died in 1938 at the age of 31.

• Her obituary was published in the Winona Daily News on 14 September 1957 in Winona, MN.

Mrs. Margaret Herman, 81, died Thursday of a stroke at her home here.

Mrs. Herman is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Frank (Mary) Soltif, Chicago; Mrs. John (Bessie) Kalnowitz, Michigan City, Ind.; Mrs. Jack (Ruby) Prok, Chicago, and Mrs. Mike (Bulah) Harnung, Peoria, Ill., one brother, Warren Shannabrook, Trempealeau, one sister, Mrs. Minnie Adams, Trempealeau, four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

She was born April 17, 1876, in Pennsylvania and had lived in the Trempealeau areas nearly all of her life. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. Her husband, John, is dead.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in the Herman home, the Rev. W. T. Walker officiating, and the OES in charge. Burial will be at the Trempealeau Cemetery. Friends may call at the Smith Mortuary at Galesville on Sunday afternoon and evening.

  Marriage Notes:

Although researcher Robert Westphal shows a marriage date of 1899 taking place in Trempealeau, Wisconsin, most other researchers reference the documented marriage in Chicago as occurring in 1898. Logically there seems to be no reason why the two residents of Trempealeau, Wisconsin would travel to Chicago to get married only to return back home to Trempealeau and continue to live there unless it was an elopement of some type.
