Donald S. Verkins, 34 year-old Red Wing art teacher, died this morning at St. John's Hospital. He resided at 1919 Audrey Ave.
Born January 6, 1937, to Sylvester and Gertrude Verkins at Manitowoc, Wis., he attended schools and was graduated from high school there in 1955. He received his BA and MA degrees in art at Winona State College, and had been teaching art in the Red Wing elementary schools since 1960.
Mr. Verkins was one of the Top 10 in the state in 1968 as Teacher of the Year. He was a member of the MEA and NEA, and of First Lutheran Church. He was married to Ruth Moland June 29, 1968 in Lee, Ill.
Surviving are his wife Ruth; his mother, Mrs. Sylvester Verkins of Winona; two brothers, Robert of Tulsa, Okla., and Earl of Appleton, Wis., and two nieces and nephews.
His father preceded him in death in July of this year.
Funeral Services will be Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at First Lutheran Church, the Rev. A.B. Walfrid officiating. Envaultment will be at Oakwood.
Friends may call at Bodelson Funeral Home Friday from 4-9 p.m. and at the church Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to the hour of services.
