Ella Burns was born about 1853. Her family possibly relocated from Pennsylvania to Ohio. Records of her are sparse - they sometimes refer to her as Della or Ellen. They do show however, that on June 30, 1883 Ella married George Henry Gushard in Mansfield, Ohio.

Ella and George settled in Richland, living for awhile in a village know as Windsor. They may have also lived in nearby Ashland county. Their family was daughters Mary, Blanch and Kathryn and they had one son Arthur Henry. Other names connected directly are Alexander, Lightfoot, Figley, Brooks, and Weisbarth.

Ella and George apparently separated or divorced sometime in around 1895. Son Arthur would have been age 10, and daughters Blanch 9, and Katherine 6. It's at this point that records show Ella living with her mother Maria Burns and her brother Michael. It seems that she died after 1899 but no death record is found. There is some indication that she may have had a stepdaughter (or a child from a second marriage), Mary Walker Hunt, but this not yet proven. It might shed some light on her disappearance.

George adds to the mystery by claiming on the census form that he is divorced and yet his death certificate states he is widowed.
