General Notes:
He was shown on the 1880 US Census at the age of 2 living with his mother at the home of his maternal grandparents. His mother would have been only 15 years old when he was born and the two of them evidently remained at home with her parents for a number of years. His surname appears on that 1880 US Census as Bowell and apparently the name of his father does not appear in any records. Later in life he used the maiden surname of his mother, Toot.
