Letter-- Hickman, Calif Nov 1-45 Dear Pearl: I received your letter yesterday. I was so glad you got home safe. I guess the children's shoes are there by now. Well honey I hardly know how to begin this letter. I went in and had a blood sugar test at 9 o'clock this morning and it was down to 160. That is just what Dr. Abbott said it should be before they operate on me. I can't understand how it could be normal because I went to a baby shower Tues afternoon and ate 2 big pieces of cake and a big serving of ice cream and a cup of hot chocolate. Then last night I ate a lot of candy. But still my blood sugar was just a little above normal. Dr. Abbott said that was what they wanted to keep it. Dr Semmens said the same thing. But (underscore) my blood pressure was 190 this morning when it should be about 140 or 145. Dr Semmens gave me a physical check up. He says the tumor in the womb is evidently shrinking as it isn't very big. But he says I am terribly lacerated and the condition of things there is enough to make me sick. He said there was only one thing to do with it & that was remove all those organs. I asked him about what he thought about removing them without an incision. He said in my case that was the only way to do it and that he liked that method anyway. After he got through examining me he talked to me for nearly an hr. He is a classmate of Dr. Gregory and says he thinks an awful lot of him. He said "I'm going to be very frank with you." I told him that was what I wanted. He says my heart is enlarged and what I have to face isn't a very bright picture, but that his advise was to put myself in Gods hands (who will do the healing any way) and go ahead & have the operation. He said they would do everything humanly possible to make me well & trust God for the rest. I said "Well Dr. Semmens that means a lot to me to know that you pray as you work. He said "Yes after all God makes you well." I said "Well if you think this old heart will make it then I'll have it done." He said he felt sure it would but that it was entirely up to me. I'm to see him next Tuesday at 3 PM & give him my decisions. He said it would probably be about 2 weeks before he could get me into the hospital and that I would have to stay there from 4 days to (ending cut-off) ----------------------------------------
