LADNER CEMETERY Mecosta Township, Mecosta County, Michigan The Ladner Cemetery is located in Section 10 of Mecosta Township on the north east corner of Hayes Road and 205th Avenue. this is about 3/4 of a mile west of old U.S. 131 in Rogers Heights.
HISTORY William Ladner was born in Cornwall County, England on 1 NOV 1834, son of James and Jane Ladner. His parents and eight children came to America in 1851. They settled on a farm located in Kent County, Michigan.
In 1856 William Ladner settled on an eighty acre timbered tract of land in Mecosta Township, Mecosta County, Michigan, and thereafter purchased land in Mecosta Township until he owned 440 acres. In 1876 and again in 1880 he was elected Probate Judge and was known as Honorable William Ladner.
On October 2, 1875, William Ladner and his wife Lucy A. Ladner, deeded by warranty deed, two and one half acres of land to the Township of Mecosta, for the sum of $75.00. The deed is recorded in Libre 22, page 192, in the office of the Register of Deeds for Mecosta County, Michigan.
The parcel of land is described as a square parcel containing two and one half acres out of the southwest corner of the west half of the northeast quarter of Section 10 of Mecosta Township, Mecosta County, Michigan, for the purpose of a cemetery.
William Ladner and his wife, Lucy A. Ladner, are buried in the cemetery. The cemetery has been known as Ladner Cemetery since the land was deeded by William Ladner and wife to Mecosta Township.
Mecosta Township presently contracts mowing from its own employees and uses Moore's Cemetery Service for burials. In the past, numerous township residents have served as sexton of the Ladner Cemetery. Some of these people are: Walter Ladner, Florus Lightfoot, Steven J. McGorman, L. B. Wilkinson, Thomas McGorman, Henry Osborne, and Wilson Wilkinson, many of whom are buried in the cemetery. ------------------------------------------
