Brian - I can't say for sure why Jacob came to Mecosta Twp, but I remember a story of Jacob Lightfoot and Haman Amos [presumably a brother of Nancy Ann Amos] scouting as far as Cadillac then coming back to settle in Mecosta County. Lumbering was HUGE. Most of the men worked in the lumber camps at some time or other. Everyone was a farmer but that area had mostly subsistence farms. They supplemented their incomes by working other jobs One very large farm that hired day workers (other men in the neighborhood) was the Ladner farm. William Ladner owned a lumbering company also. There was a door and sash company in Big Rapids early on, fed by the timber being harvested in West Michigan. The Muskegon river runs through Mecosta Twp and was the 'avenue' for transporting the logs. Grand Rapids became the 'furniture city' because of the availability of local materials and Chicago was rebuilt, after the big fire, in large part with lumber from Michigan. Who knows just why they came, but people were the same then as now with family squabbles and intrigue.

Here is the story told to me by Florus Lightfoot, my grandfather and son of Jacob and Nancy. They were both born in Ohio. Nancy was engaged to Jacob's brother, Levi. Both boys entered the army to serve in the Civil War. (I think the first Ohio volunteers ). Levi died of measles during the war. I have a picture of the two boys in uniforms. Jacob brought home Levi's personal effects which included a tintype of Nancy. I have it. Jacob and Nancy (and I think her brother Haman) set out for Michigan in 1870. They were married on the way in Casco, Michigan. They came to Mecosta County and took a farm not far from my husbands great-grandparents, the Ladners. Jacob died from injuries in a stump pulling machine accident. I have an obit. Nancy died in Lansing, Michigan while living with her son, Ceylon. My mother lived with her for a time so knew her well. There is a genealogy floating around that names the wrong mother of Jacob B. His mother was Mary Ann Hughes. Apparently, William left her at some point and married a 'Miss Lee'. But Mary Ann was the mother of his children. Do not hesitate to ask questions. I spent much time listening to stories of my Mother, grandfather, aunts and uncles. I have many cousins and misc. relatives living in Michigan. First cousins and also the children, etc of Jacob and Nancy's other sons. I hope to help.
