Marriage Notes:
George and Agnes were marriage about 1847 in Scotland. In 1851, George, Agnes and their one daughter immigrated to the US arriving with George's parents on 14 Jul 1851 in New York City. While living in New York, they had one more daughter and one son born there in New York. Sometime between 1856 and 1860, George and his family traveled once again with his parents to Wayne County, Michigan where they all appeared on the 1860 US Census there. Nearly all of the other family members stayed in the Wayne County, Michigan area for their entire lives.
In spite of the family appearing in 1860 in Wayne County, Michigan, nothing else is known about the parents or their two daughters. The son ended up in Monroe County, Michigan.
There are records of a George Renton and wife, Agnes Hamilton who were living in Ash Township of Monroe County, Michigan which was just to the south of Wayne County. What is unique about that is that the son of George Renton and Agnes (?), Andrew Renton, was married to Mary Reinhart and they were living in Ash Township of Monroe County since 1880. This would certainly seem like they were the same couple except for a few points. The first is a death record for a daughter of the George Renton living in Monroe County indicates that he had a daughter named Nancy who was born on 15 Feb 1848 in Scotland. That birth date would seem to conflict with the birth date of a daughter born in 1848 in Scotland named Agnes. That daughter, Agnes, was named on the passenger ship's list while a daughter named Nancy was not listed.
There are additional records of another daughter named Marian that was born on 31 May 1861 in Flat Rock, Wayne County, Michigan and who died in 1932 in Waukegan, Lake County, Illinois. Her parents were named as George Renton and Agnes Hamilton.
It would be so easy to assign the name of Hamilton as a surname to George's wife based on these records and the fact that their son moved to Monroe County but the conflict with the birth year and the name of a daughter named Nancy not being shown on the ship's passenger list makes that too much to assume to be true without additional documentation. ----------------------------------------------
