  Marriage Notes:

Mr. Harry R. Shafer, son of Theodore C. Shafer, of near Middletown, and Miss Reta Lewis, daughter of Mrs. Harry Lewis, of Jefferson, were quietly married in this city Saturday night at the home of Rev. M. A. Castle, 370 Madison street, at about 10 o'clock. Following the ceremony the happy young couple left for Waynesboro, where they will spend a week as the guest of the bridegroom's uncle, Mr. Arthur F. Shafer. Upon their return they will reside at the home of Mr. Theodore Shafer. Both young people are very popular in their respective towns, where they are well-known.

NOTE - If you read between the lines of this marriage announcement, it should be clear that the young couple actually eloped. Rita Lewis was only 15 years old at the time and the wedding was performed at 10 o'clock at night at the home of the pastor. They then stayed with an uncle for a week and finally returned home to live with the groom's parents.
