  General Notes:

His birth registration from Washtenaw County, Michigan and the first few census records show his name only as Laurence Renton. Beginning with his WWI Draft Registration Cards and subsequent census records, his name was shown as Robert Laurence Renton.

The adjoining page of the 1891 Washtenaw County Birth register gives the names of the parents of each birth but in the case of (Robert) Laurence Renton, there is a small folded piece of paper that only says "Filed Sep 17 1941". When microfilmed, this folded piece of paper was not opened up. Typically these are birth amendments or legal corrections to the original entry. In this case, I suspect that he may have had his name legally changed to add the Robert at the front.

Also somewhat confusing is the actual date of his birth. The image of the Washtenaw County Birth Register clearly shows Laurence Renton with a birth date of 26 Dec 1891. Almost all of his adult life, he provided his birth date as 26 Jan 1892. I have no reason why he never knew his birth date.
