According to the 1900 census, George was a Grocer while Charlotte was listed as a Farmer. In addition, it is difficult to tell whether they lived in a house or on a farm but I suspect that the census forms had no provisions for the definition of a plantation and that George probably ran the local grocery store while long time family residents probably ran the plantation. It must have been a large plantation type home because of the large number of families living there: not only George and his family, but his single sister Laura, Charlotte's unmarried sister, Charlotte's widowed mother, Charlotte's unmarried brother, and Charlotte's married brother along with his wife and 2 children. |
