1 Miss Dora Mildred Magaha, 83, of East Main Street, Thurmont, died Sunday, May 1, at Frederick Memorial Hospital.

Born March 11, 1911, in Crookston, Minn., she was a daughter of the late John William Hilleary and Lucy May Sulcer Magaha. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Miss Magaha graduated from Frederick High School in 1929 and received a teacher's certificate from Towson State Normal School in 1931. She received a bachelor of science degree in elementary education in 1942 and her master's degree in elementary education in 1959 from the University of Maryland.

She began her teaching career at Point of Rocks Elementary School, where she taught from September 1931 to the fall of 1933 in grades three and four. She then accepted a transfer to Parkway School in Frederick, where she taught for the next 20 years. In 1953, she went to Lewistown Elementary School as principal, and in 1954 was the principal at Thurmont Elementary School and the new Thurmont elementary school. She retired in 1977 with 46 years' teaching and supervision. For 10 years following her retirement, she was a volunteer teaching assistant at Thurmont Elementary School.

She was active in the Thurmont Public Library; was a member of National Teacher Education Association and the Retired Frederick County Teachers Association; was corresponding secretary of the Thurmont Senior Citizens; and was a member of Trinity United Church of Christ in Thurmont, where she served in the church's women's group and in the bible class. She was a member of Gamma chapter, Delta Kappa Gamma, and received the Community Citizen Award from the Thurmont Grange.

Surviving are a nephew and his wife, Calvin Lee and Teresa Martin Lawyer of Wabash, Ind.; as well as several great-nieces and great nephews.

She also is remembered by two devoted friends, Kay and Alice Stambaugh of Thurmont.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, E. Adeline Lawyer and Annabelle Kelbaugh.

Miss Magaha is at the Thurmont funeral home of Robert E. Dailey and Son, 615 E. Main St., where friends may call Tuesday, May 3, from 1 to 9 p.m. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral services will begin at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 4, at the funeral home. Interment will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Frederick.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Trinity United Church of Christ, 101 E. Main St., Thurmont, Md. 21788; or Thurmont Ambulance Col, 23 N. Church St., Thurmont, Md. 21788.
