Caroline married Levi Ernsberger, son of John Ernsberger and Mary Ann Archer, on 1 July 1850 in , Richland County, OH.1 (Levi Ernsberger was born in 1829 in Ohio 3 4 and died after 8 May 1863.)

• They appeared on the 1850 US Census in Mifflin Township, Richland County, OH on 22 August 1850. 2

Harris Hastings...22..NH

NOTE - Caroline Ernsberger was actually Caroline Hastings who was the wife of Levi Ernsberger. Harris Hastings must have been her brother. The death certificate for their son, Daniel Franklin Ernsberger, lists his father as Levi Ernsberger and his mother as Caroline Hastings. No other proof of their marriage seems to exist.

One other anomaly exists in this census. Levi and Caroline were not married until 1 Jul 1850 which technically was one month after the cut-off date for the census. But because the census was so late, 22 Aug 1850, the census enumerator must have taken information as it existed on that late date instead of 1 June.

bullet  Marriage Notes:

More and more evidence seems to point to the fact that Levi and his family left Jones County, Iowa and moved back to Richland County, Ohio sometime between 1860 and 1863.

1. A daughter named Margaret E. Ernsberger, born 1863 in Lucas, Ohio
(Death certificate indicates Levi Ernsberger as the father of Margaret. Additionally, in the 1900 census, Simon J. Ernsberger was living with "Maggie" Baer and her children in Lucas, Ohio.)

2. A son, Daniel Franklin Ernsberger, is found in the 1870 census living with his half-first cousin, Elias Ernsberger in Richland County, Ohio.

3. A daughter, Martha E. Ernsberger, was married in 1878 in Richland County, Ohio

Unfortunately, Levi and wife cannot be found anywhere in the 1870 census, neither in Iowa nor in Ohio, or anyplace else. In fact, none of the children can be found in the 1870 census but given that the surname is subject to a multitude of spellings, it may be transcribed in an obscure spelling which may take time to find.
