• His obituary was published after 8 August 2003. Henry O. Wehmeyer, 88, Muscatine, died Friday, Aug. 8, 2003, at the VA Medical Center, Knoxville.

Services are 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 13, at the Geo. M. Wittich-Lewis Funeral Home. The Rev. Ralph Jeambey will officiate. Pallbearers are Brian Dusenberry, Joshua Carroll, Douglas Bunn, Sr., John Murray, Michael Wehmeyer, and Robert Wehmeyer. Burial will be at Conesville Cemetery with military rites conducted by the Columbus Junction American Legion Post No. 100.

Visitation is 5-7 p.m. today at the funeral home. A memorial has been established at the funeral home.

Mr. Wehmeyer was born on Jan. 11, 1915, in Conesville, the son of Daniel A. and Ruth M. Bradley Wehmeyer. He married Frieda W. Stratton on June 20, 1936, in Columbus City. She preceded him in death on May 31, 2000.

He was a life-long resident of Muscatine County and worked for the City of Muscatine in the sanitation department. He also retired from Oscar Mayer after 20 years, but for most of his life, he farmed with area farmers.

He was a member of the Moose Lodge and the American Legion.

He was an U.S. Army Veteran serving during World War II.

Survivors include three sons, Richard A. Wehmeyer and his wife, Carolee, of Muscatine, James Wehmeyer and his wife, Jeanne, of Davenport and Jeffrey Wehmeyer and his wife, Laura, of Muscatine; a daughter, Delores Bergen of Muscatine; 10 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; a daughter, Reta Wehmeyer; five brothers; four sisters; and a grandson, Richard Wehmeyer Jr.

Henry and Frieda share one gravestone which is a large vertical face monument of gray granite. In the middle of the front face is the name WEHMEYER in large block letters. In the lower left it reads "Henry O., January 11, 1915 - Aug 8, 2003" while in the lower right it reads "Frieda W., April 7, 1918 - May 31, 2000 ". Along the bottom edge it reads "Parents of Richard, Delores, James, Reta, Jeff".
