Luke Corker 1
- Born: 21 August 1878 1
- Died: 1 September 1881 at age 3 1
- Buried: After 1 September 1881, Springdale Township, Cedar County, IA 1
Burial Notes:
In the same Pee Dee Cemetery in which Luke Corker and his wife, Catharine Lightfoot, are buried there is another gothic tablet grave marker of white sand stone showing the name of "Luke Corker, son of A. M. & L. M. Corker, Died September 1, 1881, Aged 3 Y. 11 D."
I first thought that the father, A. M. Corker, as given on the gravestone must be Archibald Monroe Corker, the son of the older Luke Corker that was born in 1818. However, 1880 Census records show Archibald Monroe Corker as a 24 year old single male still living at home with his father so therefore he apparently could not be the father of this younger Luke Corker in spite of what the gravestone appears to say.
His wife, Lillie May Roberts, was enumerated in 1880 as single and still living with her step-parents, Joseph and Martha Hutcheson. However, the 1900 US Census shows Archibald married in 1881 to "Millie M." (her name was actually "Lillie M."). Therefore it appears that he indeed fathered the child with Lillie in 1878 without benefit of marriage.
What is missing from the 1880 US Census is that the name of the young 2 year old Luke Corker who fails to show up living with either family. Apparently information about his birth was being withheld from public knowledge. So where was the young, Luke? Probably with his then 24 year old mother, Lillie Roberts, who was caring for him while she remained with her step-parents. I have no idea why Archibald and Lillie waited 3 years after the birth of Luke to finally get married. ------------------------------------------------
