Charles Orville Sharp ¹

  General Notes:

After his mother and father had separated just before 1900, he and his mother had moved back to the home of her parents according to the 1900 US Census. His father had moved on to Saint Joseph, Missouri where he was remarried sometime between 1900 and 1910. Charles appears on the 1900 US Census at the home of his grandfather with a given name of Ora and both he and his mother had the surname of Sharp. The enumerator of the census incorrectly listed him as a son instead of a grandson of the head of the household, his maternal grandfather, Lewis Huett. Mary Ann appears on this census with the given name of Emma which was probably an enumerator's mistake for hearing the name of Anna. It was a common practice of the grandfather to call his children by their middle names.

By the 1910 US Census, his mother had remarried to William E. Barr and they were all living in Rock Falls, Illinois but Charles appears on that census with the surname of Barr instead of Sharp. It is not known if he was ever legally adopted or if Mary and William just made it convenient to make his name Barr without any legal consequences. She even claimed that she had been married to William for 13 years instead of 9 years thus making the 12 year old Charles seem as a natural child of their marriage.

Charles used the surname of Barr for the remained of his life and it appears on his gravestone. It makes one wonder if he ever realized that his biological father was actually Bert Sharp instead of William Barr.
