bullet General Notes:

Adolphus was probably not a biological son of Erastus and Mary Roberts. The reasons for this are that his name was missing from the 1870 US Census when he would have been about 9 years old and the fact that he was the only sibling that was born in Ohio instead of Missouri. There is no evidence that Erastus and Mary ever traveled back to Ohio.

However, Mary H. Holmes was born near Athens County, Ohio where Adolphus was born. It may be possible that Adolphus could have been a nephew to Mary from one of her siblings that could not care for him and he might have been sent to live with Mary and Erastus adopting either officially or unofficially the Roberts surname. This transfer from Ohio to Missouri would have occurred sometime between 1870 and 1880 when Adolphus first appeared on the 1880 US Census with Erastus and Mary Roberts.

There seems to be no source citations pertaining to a birth for Adolphus Frederick Roberts in Ohio around 1860 so his true parentage is unknown.

Adolphus and his wife, Elmina, were not enumerated in the 1920 US Census because at that time they had left to visit their son, his wife, and their grandchild in Changsha, Hunan, China according to their passport application. They remained there for about one year to return home to Boulder, Colorado in 1921.

On the same day, their son, Roy, also made a passport application with his young son, Everett, to return to Shanghai, China after his first wife had died their earlier that year.

Still residing in China at the time was their oldest son, Raymond with his wife, Eva. Both brothers were in China for work related to their profession as civil engineers. Both brothers would return to Colorado shortly after 1924.
