Adolphus and his wife, Elmina, were not enumerated in the 1920 US Census because at that time they had left to visit their son, his wife, and their grandchild in Changsha, Hunan, China according to their passport application. They remained there for about one year to return home to Boulder, Colorado in 1921.

On the same day, their son, Roy, also made a passport application with his young son, Everett, to return to Shanghai, China after his first wife had died their earlier that year.

Still residing in China at the time was their oldest son, Raymond with his wife, Eva. Both brothers were in China for work related to their profession as civil engineers. Both brothers would return to Colorado shortly after 1924.
