  General Notes:

Faith moved around quite a bit during her lifetime. She was born in Kansas in 1896 but by June 1900 her parents had moved to Lehi City, Utah County, Utah where she was enumerated with her family there for the 1900 US Census on 8 June 1900. However, somehow Faith's name also appears as if she were living with her maternal grandparents back in Manhattan, Kansas on the same day of 8 June 1900 for the census enumeration there. The distance between Lehi, Utah and Manhattan, Kansas is about 1,000 miles. When the 1900 US Census happened, it was just coincidental that her parents and grandparents were enumerated on the same exact day. But the question remains, exactly where was Faith on the day of the enumeration. She could not have been at both places at the same time.

I suspect that when her parents moved from Kansas to Utah, they may have left Faith with her maternal grandparents in Manhattan, George and Henriette Perry. Her parents continued to list her as part of the family living in Utah perhaps because they thought they should list all children regardless of where the children were living or perhaps they listed her in order to gain some additional governmental assistance based on family size. The latter seems unlikely as the father was a college professor and probably not in need of any special governmental assistance. Maybe as a one-year old infant, Faith was not in the best of health and unable to travel the 1000 miles so the parents left her in the temporary care of her grandparents. We'll never know the exact reason.

When Faith's father died in Utah in 1903, her mother moved back to Manhattan, Kansas with her 2 additional children born in Utah where the mother and all three daughters were enumerated in the 1905 Kansas State Census living at the home of Faith's maternal grandparents. What is unique about this census is that one of the pieces of data collected for each person was to indicate from which state they had moved from prior to living in Kansas. In the case of Faith's mother and the two other daughters, all three indicated that they had moved from Utah. However in the case of Faith, it indicated that she had not come from another state but was from Kansas.

This answers the question about the 1900 US Census in which Faith's name was listed once with her parents in Utah and then a second time with her grandparents back in Kansas. As I had suspected, Faith had never traveled to Utah with the parents but for some reason stayed behind with the grandparents in Kansas.

After Faith was married in Kansas in 1915 to Jacob Holmes, the 1920 US Census shows them living in Brookings, South Dakota along with 3 children. Her first two children had been born in Kansas but her third child, was born just one year earlier in 1919 in Colorado.

The 1930 US Census shows Faith and her husband living in Laverne, Oklahoma. Her fourth and fifth children had been born in South Dakota but her six child, Lois Claire Holmes, who was also born in South Dakota, was not listed with her mother when she would have been about 9 years old.

However, on that same 1930 US Census, the name of Nancy J. Holmes was listed as 8 years old instead of the expected 1 year old. At the same time, the name of Lois Claire Holmes was listed as a granddaughter with the Mobley family about 2 families distant on the census form but with an age of 1 year instead of the expected 9.

I think the enumerator was very confused about the names of the children and their ages and probably mixed up the name of the child staying with the supposed grandparents. Instead of Lois living with the Mobleys, it was probably the 1 year old Nancy. Instead of Nancy living with her mother, it was probably Lois.

After that suspiciously flawed 1930 US Census, the 1940 enumeration showed the family still living in the same location of Laverne, Oklahoma. In addition to the oldest son, Jacob Jr., there was also the daughters Lois and Nancy listed together for the first time in addition to Mary. Both Faith and her husband, Jacob, are buried in Laverne.
