Gladys Lorene Truitt, 95, of Kirksville, Missouri passed away Wednesday morning (September 24, 1997) at the Twin Pines Adult Care Center in Kirksville, Missouri.

The daughter of Edward Parker and Mollie Turner Homes she was born December 13, 1901 in Southern Adair county, near La Plata, Missouri. On August 5, 1926 in Kirksville, Missouri she was united in marriage to Jesse M. Truitt who preceded her in death on June 8, 1965. Also preceding her in death were her parents; one sister, Alpha Crawford and one brother, Parker Homes.

Surviving are one daughter and son-in-law, Dianthe and William H. Cable of Kirksville, Missouri; two granddaughters, Krista Llewellen and husband Lance of Kirksville, Missouri and Sara Knorr and husband David of Rolla, Missouri and several nieces and nephews.

Gladys was a life-long resident of Adair County and received her education and graduated from the La Plata High School in 1919. She taught for a number of years in Southern Adair County rural schools and was later employed with the Northeast Missouri State Teachers College as a cashier for Missouri Hall.

Gladys served as a member of the Adair County Extension Council and was active in Red Cross Blood Mobile work, receiving a twenty year recognition of service. She was an RSVP volunteer for several years, was past Noble Grand of La Plata Rebekah Lodge #86 and past Matron of Novinger Chapter O.E.S. #336, later becoming a member of the Kirksville Chapter #184 where she was still a member at the time of her death, was a member of Betsy Ann Ross Coats Chapter of the Daughters of Union Veterans, a member of the "Arts For Adults", class at Northeast Missouri State University and was a member of the W.P.F.A. Club of Adair County for many years.

Gladys was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Kirksville where she was a member of the Ruth Circle, the L.A.F. Club and played several years in the band bell choir. She was also a member of the Methodist Wednesday Quilters Club for several years.

Funeral services will be held at two o'clock Saturday (September 27, 1997) at the Travis-Noe Funeral Home in Kirksville, Missouri. Reverend Leota Moore and Reverend Jim Robinson will officiate the service. Music will be provided by Cheryl Newland, organist and Mary Weerts and Melodie Sevits, soloist. The music selections will be "Whispering Hope" and "How Lovely Are Thy Dwellings". Burial will be at the Maple Hills Cemetery in Kirksville, Missouri.

Pallbearers will be Larry Homes, Charles Truitt, Eldon Coy, Lance Llewellen, David Knorr and Robert Mason.

Honorary bearers will be Lula Ketchem, Mary Lee Hall, Mary Botkin, Marie Novinger, Mary Mauck, Hilda Novinger, Velma Bragg and Beverly Kitts.

Visitation will be held Friday (September 26, 1997) at the Travis-Noe Funeral Home in Kirksville and the family will receive friends from six to eight o'clock that evening in the chapel of the Travis-Noe Funeral Home.

The casket will be closed at the beginning of her service at two o'clock Saturday and will remain closed.

An expression of sympathy in memory of Gladys Truitt may be made to the First United Methodist Church music program or to the Adair County Humane Society. Memorials may be left at or mailed to the Travis-Noe Funeral Home, Kirksville, Mo.
