Marriage Notes:
Typed notes on plain paper regarding Samuel and Mary are from some Shreve Family History Files on record in Wayne Co., Ohio. This record stated that: "We do know both were born in NJ and came to Fayette Co. PA where most of the children were born...they settled first in eastern OH then to the Holmes/Wayne Co. area where most of the children were at one time...Thomas, Hugh, Mary and Israel moved to Indiana as well as the parents. Parents believed to have died there.... Samuel did own land early in Holmes Co. OH then sold to Ludwick. Both he and wife signed deed, but did not get her name as it said the wife signed in Dutch..." author: Marion Watchel Kimber.
This story is from the Holmes Co. Library: --" Two families of Shreves settled in Shreve, Wayne County, Ohio early in the 18th century. One native of Holland, the other from Wales -- both coming from Fayette County, Pennsylvania. The Thomas Shreve and Samuel Shreve -- heads of the families.
"Samuel and Mary (Lightfoot) Shreve were our ancestors. Of them little is known. They were farmers from Fayette County, Pennsylvania and having come West, settled in Eastern OH. They had land in Pennsylvania and sand was discovered and when water was high rafted it to Pittsburg to the glass works there. He also had lots of timber which was rafted for ship building. We do not know why they came to OH unless the Thomas Shreve family had settled there in Wayne County. Samuel and Mary had 8 children - 5 sons and 3 daughters. Israel - Samuel - Jonah - Enoch and Hugh. Mary - Lydia and Abbie. Samuel our own grandfather -- Thomas - father of Hugh Shreve of Nashville, Israel, - father of Enoch of Cameron, Missouri -- Hugh of Indiana - father of Elmer and Alma -- Jonah, father of Harriet Critchfield of Ripley. Mary Lightfoot Shreve lived in Boon County, Indiana. Abbie married Richard Shreve of the other branch which settled in Shreve. They lived and died in Lakeville, Ohio, he operating a grist mill. Lydia Campbell Shreve lived and died in Harrison, Ohio.
Nothing to boast about in our family -- only hard working farmers -- honest and trust-worthy. Members of the Disciple Church almost to the last one. Abbie Shreve family were Baptists." --unknown author (Darn!)
According to a local OH historian, Larry Knox, who has done extensive research on the Shreves, Samuel Sr. and Mary went to Indiana and died there. They are buried either in Porter or LaPorte Co. IN.
