William married Mahala Himes on 29 March 1864 in , Richland County, OH.¹ (Mahala Himes was born about 1846 and died after 29 March 1864.)

  Marriage Notes:

What seems unusual about this marriage is that William apparently was single when he first enlisted in the Army in 1861. He did not marry Mahala until Mar 1864 when he must have been home on a temporary furlough. One year later he died in South Carolina at the age of 25. She promptly applied for and received his pension payments.

There are records of a marriage in 1868 in Richland County, Ohio between a Mahala Sackman and C. H. Van Thorne but I'm not sure if it was the same person but given her young age, she probably did remarry.
