bullet  Marriage Notes:

The names of all their children seems confusing. On the 1900 census, Arabelle was listed as widowed and with a total of 11 children, 7 of whom were still alive. But if the husband, Jonathan Daniel, had died in 1899 before the 1900 census, how could genealogists list 14 or more names whereas the wife lists only 11 total names?

Those children known to be alive at the 1900 census were:
1. Bertha A.
2. George Henry
3. William H. (slight possibility that he may not have been alive)
4. Robert W.
5. Daniel Ross
6. Grace
7. Mary
8. Charles C.

So right away we have a problem with the number of children. Eight were known to still be alive but Arabella indicated only 7. The name of William H. Sackman on that list is troublesome. There are records for him later in his life but he eventually died in Pennsylvania whereas all his siblings remained in Ohio. If he did indeed die before 1900, then that brings Arabella's list of only 7 surviving children to the correct number. But another question arises as to why his name in not shown on the joint gravestone with his father and other 5 siblings.

The husband, Jonathan Daniel Sackman, who died in 1899 is buried in London Cemetery and his gravestone also indicates the names of 5 children who are buried alongside of him. Unfortunately, there are no dates on the gravestone for any of the children. Those names with their known dates in parenthesis are:
1. Stella D. (1870 - 1894)
2. Jessie H. (1875 - ?)
3. Margery R. (1892 - 1893)
4. Helen C. (? - ?)
5. Ruth (? - ?)

So there are only 3 children known to have died before the 1900 census (Estella, Margery, and the stillborn daughter). The fourth name according to Arabella's indication must be either Jessie, Helen, or Ruth. The stillborn child from 1896 was a daughter and was either not given a name or perhaps she was Helen or Ruth. We just don't know.

The difference between 11 names or 14 or more names might be due to a faulty memory of Arabella's, but she was only 51 years old at the time. Otherwise, there might be some duplication of names. For example, Mary might be the same as Margery. Some researchers show Hobart as an additional son but Hobart was the middle name of the son, William H. Sackman. Even allowing for the possible duplication of names, there still seems to be more than the 11 children that Arabella indicated on the 1900 census.

And one final problem. The name of Ruth on the joint gravestone of Jonathon Daniel Sackman may not be that of his daughter but rather of a granddaughter, Ruth Littler, who was born in 1892 to Estella Sackman who died in 1894. Estella was married to Luther Littler in 1889 but her name appears on the gravestone only as "Stella D" with no mention of her maiden name of Sackman nor her married name of Littler. It is for this reason that it may be possible for the "Ruth" also listed on the gravestone to be Ruth Littler.

It would be nice for someone to check the records of London Cemetery and confirm full names and dates but I doubt if the rural cemetery has such complete records.
