MRS. SIDNA B. REESE HAD LIVED THRU 22 presidents; heard Lincoln-Douglas debate

West Plains oldest resident Mrs. Sidna B. Reese, widow of David W. Reese, died Saturday morning 4:40 at her home on South Curry Street, death resulting from senile ailments. She had been extremely frail since her 99th birthday and spent most of her time in bed. Last few weeks she had been growing weaker and had been up very little.

Surviving her are one son Harry Simpson of Sonora, California, a daughter Mrs. O. S. (Grace Simpson) Owen of Topeka, Kansas, a great grand-daughter Miss Peggy Profitt of Colorado Springs and one brother Robert Bryan, 97, living in Boulder, Colorado. A daughter, Mrs Frank D. (Minnie Simpson) Morton of Chase, Kansas has been dead for some years as also Miss Profitt's mother who was a daughter of the Mortons.

The brother in Boulder is still quite active and was in West Plains to assist Mrs. Reese in celebrating her 90th birthday. He joined Mr. Reese and two cousins of Lincoln, Illinois who were then 95 and 97 respectively in a reunion in Topeka, Kansas in 1940.

Mrs. Reese lived under the reign of 22 Presidents. She was born 9-17-1846 in Lincoln, Illinois during the administration of James K. Polk and had lived thru 22 of the 32 Presidents of the United States.

As a little girl in Lincoln, she was present at one of the famous debates between Lincoln and Stephen A. Douglas and in an interview with the Quill several years ago, she recalled some of the incidents in connection with that occasion. She remembered Douglas opened the debate, and that as the tall, rangy Lincoln arouse to answer his opponent with an equally brilliant barrage of oratory, he laid his coat across a nearby table and giving it a final pat, smiled and said, "Now you lay there until I stone Stephen."

She came to Howell County in 1885. Mrs. Reese whose first husband was Captain Thomas J. Simpson, an officer of Company D, 2nd Illinois Calvary during the Civil War, came to Howell County with her husband in 1885, on a farm at South Fork, in the southern part of the county before coming to West Plains.

Mrs. Reese's first husband had been dead several years before she was married 31 years ago to David W. Reese, a pioneer banker, who with his family had moved to West Plains in 1882 and who had been an intimate friend of the Simpson family since that time. He also was a Civil war veteran and both he and Captain Simpson were prominent members of the old John Rollins A.R. Post here. Mr. Reese died in 1928.

A woman of culture and much personal charm, Mrs. Reese had always been a revered person in her large circle of friends. Retiring, but kindly in manner she lived quietly for many years. However her last years she had been active in the Presbyterian Church work being a member of the Woman's Council, Sunday School worker, and interested in every department.

Beginning with her 90th birthday she had been honored at elaborate and interesting affairs. But before her birthday arrived this year she requested intimate friends to "forget" her birthday, a request that was honored because those nearest knew it would be taxing on her waining strength. Almost to the end of her days, Mrs. Reese maintained her keen interest in friends, church and national affairs. She had been particularly interested and concerned about WWII, its ending and post war plans. Although her vision had been impaired by an eye ailment, friends read the newspaper to her and she also learned much from the radio.

Funeral Services will be held tomorrow at 2 in the Presbyterian church where the body will lie in state from noon until 2. The Rev. John W. Sexton will be in charge. Mrs. Owen, the daughter from Topeka will be present, but the son in California will not be able to make the trip.

Burial will be in Oak Lawn Cemetery where she will be laid to rest with her first husband, Captain Simpson. Funeral and burial arrangements are in charge of the Hal Thornburg Funeral Home.
