General Notes:
Louise's parents, Harriet "Hattie" Houser and Henry "Harry" Medbery, a farmer, came to North Dakota from the town of Atlanta in Logan County, Illinois. Louise, her mother and a brother spent time in Illinois during her childhood, but later returned to live in Ransom County, North Dakota. Louise was educated in public schools in Illinois and Lisbon, North Dakota, and attended the University of Minnesota. She was an active participant in the social life of Ransom county, and her name often appeared in society items in area newspapers.
On May 15, 1906, Louise married Michael Bahghot De La Bere. He was a long-time bachelor who was considered "a catch" in local society. He had came to America from England in 1892, with the intention of becoming a farmer on the American frontier. After a brief try at farming, he turned to newspaper work, at first as a reporter and all-purpose employee, but soon becoming editor and publisher of the Sheldon Progress (Lisbon and Sheldon are both in Ransom County, about 20 miles apart). Michael was also well-known in Ransom county's social circles; many events that Louise and Michael attended were reported in various North Dakota publications.
In April 1907 a daughter, named Frances after Louise's grandmother, was born. Even before the birth of their child, Louise began suffering from tuberculosis. She went to Colorado Springs, Colorado in hopes that the climate would improve her health, but died there less than two years after her marriage. Almost simultaneously with her death, her husband Michael became ill with a suspected brain tumor and died in North Dakota five months later.
Louise and Michael have a shared grave marker in Oakwood Cemetery in Lisbon, where both had lived before their marriage and where other members of Louise's family still lived. Louise's sister Lillian and her husband, Dr. Arthur Patterson, are also buried in Oakwood--Lillian contracted tuberculosis while caring for Louise when she was sick and died three years later from the same disease.
Louise's mother, Hattie Medbery, cared for Frances after Louise's and Michael's deaths, remaining in Ransom county for a few years, then returning to Atlanta, Illinois with Frances. Frances attended school in Atlanta and when she was 14 years old, traveled to England for the first time to visit her relatives there, returning again 10 years later in 1931, and finally permanently moving to England with her husband. Hattie died in Atlanta in Logan County in 1927--all four of her children and her husband had died before her; Frances and one granddaughter who was the child of Hattie's son Von Roon were her only direct descendants. ------------------------------------------------
