bullet  Marriage Notes:

There were multiple Hatfield families living in Logan County, Illinois around 1870 when Cornelius and Martha "Mattie" were first married. Apparently Cornelius was from Menard County, Illinois and soon after his marriage, they moved to Menard county where they appear in the 1870 census.

I do not know what happened to Martha but by the census of 1880, Cornelius was living with his two children back in the home of his parents. His marital status was not indicated as divorced or widowed but still as married. I have no idea where Martha was at the time.

By June of 1900, the census shows their son, Edgar, living back with Martha's parents in Logan County, Illinois but without either of his parents being present. The daughter, Lula, is found living with her paternal grandmother who was widowed by this time. Neither parent of Lula is found in the household. With the evidence that one son was sent to his mother's parents and the other daughter was sent to her father's widowed mother, I would think it might be easy to assume that both Cornelius and Martha had died by 1900.
