NOTE - This was a strange census for the Edgar household in 1880 because only George and Mary had the Edgar surname; all others had a different surname even though almost all were related in some fashion.
Maude Hatfield was a daughter of Martha Edgar but it was highly probable that Martha had died sometime between 1870 and 1880. During the 1880 census, her husband Cornelius Hatfield was back with his parents with two children but obviously the oldest daughter, Maude, was sent to live with her maternal grandparents.
Sarah Houser was an aunt to Mary M. Chowning. Sarah's husband, Soloman Houser, had died in 1874 and she was therefore living with Mary and George Edgar. -------------------------------------- .

NOTE - The enumerator of this census page wrote quite sloppily and certain procedures were not followed for the data entry making it very difficult to figure out the exact names and the exact relationships.
Maud K. Brunsbach is most likely Maud Hatfield. The spelling of her married surname is very difficult to discern and looks like Brunsbach, Brunbach, or even Brownback.
The next problem with the census involves the two names following Maud K. Brunsbach. The enumerator started out the entry with a long continuous horizontal which typically meant the same surname as previously given right above. In this case, it would mean the surname of Brunsback but then the relationship to George Edgar was given as "son" (relationship entries are all based on the relationship to the head of household). How could two sons of George Edgar have a surname of Brunsbach? Even their birth years of about 1890 would mean that George fathered them at about the age of 70. I suspect that these two are actually sons of Maud Brunsbach and therefore the correct relationship for these two should have been "great-grandson".
The next line with the entry for Edgar Hatfield indicated that he was a grandson to George Edgar. But it is difficult to discern which of George's daughters would have been the mother since she is not living there. There are only a few possibilities of any daughter being married to a Hatfield around 1870-1872 when Edgar Hatfield was born and they would include Mary Ann (from his first wife), Martha, and Alice who married Theodore Sharon about 1878. Any one of them is a possibility of being the mother but I doubt if Alice was briefly married to a Hatfield and then within 6 years or so, married again to Theodore Sharon. Compounding the problem with the name of Edgar Hatfield is the fact that the enumerator started out his entry with the straight horizontal line which might lead one to believe that the name being entered should be construed as Hatfield Edgar H. Brunsbach, or even worse, Hatfield Edgar H. Edgar! After a little research, I found a marriage between Cornelius Hatfield and Mattie Edgar on 30 August 1868 in Logan County on the Illinois Statewide Marriage Index web site but it provides no other information other than names and the date of the license. Knowing that "Mattie" was most likely Martha Elizabeth Edgar, I then checked the 1870 census and found them living in nearby Petersburg in Menard County, Illinois. So for the time being, I think it would be safe to assume that the Edgar H. Hatfield on this 1900 census would be the son of Martha Elizabeth Edgar.
The final entry for this family group was for the name George W. Edgar, Jr but once again the enumerator started out with another straight horizontal line which can lead to the false surname assumptions indicated in the previous paragraph. Given the fact that this was the "junior" to a George W. Edgar, Sr, it would seem clear that the enumerator's use of the horizontal lines at the beginning of the entries is mostly extraneous and can probably be ignored for the Hatfield entry as well as the two sons of Maud Brunsbach. Given the young age for the George, Jr., I can safely assume that the "Senior" is not George W. Edgar born in 1819, bur rather another George probably born around 1860. The George C. Edgar born in 1855 would be a good suspect for being the senior, and thus the father of this George W. Edgar, Jr. Unfortunately neither George C. Edgar nor his wife, Hattie, can be found in any census record past 1880 and the George "Junior" was born in 1884.
After sorting through the enumerator's sloppy reporting, what I am left with is just one big mystery: which one of George's children was a parent to George W. Edgar, Jr. or if George C. Edgar was the parent, can his family be located in any census that shows the George Junior living there?
And one final note. On this 1900 census, the wife, Mary Chowning, reported that she had a total of 9 children of whom only 2 were still living. That is an extreme ratio of children dying early. Of the two still living, I know for sure that Sarah Frances Edgar lived past 1900. The second possible name would any one of the following four candidates: (1) William Robert Edgar has no information beyond 1870. (2) Martha Elizabeth Edgar has no information beyond 1870 but because her children were split up between the surviving husband and her own parents, it is very probable that she died sometime between 1870 and 1880. (3) George C. Edgar has no definite information beyond 1880. (4) Alice Louise Edgar also with no definite information beyond 1880. Only one of those 4 names listed survived beyond 1900. The other three would have died before 1900. ----------------------------------- .
