James McLaughlin was born June 1, 1815 in County Derry, Ireland, where he spent his childhood. He came to America in 1834 and settled in Philadelphia, where he was united in marriage in 1835 with Elizabeth Smith. She was born in 1813. Died on May 15, 1887. They removed to Iowa in 1856 and settled near the mouth of Old Mans Creek in Liberty Township, Johnson County, Iowa. His wife died May 15, 1887. The deceased was stricken with palsy last Sunday evening, and never rallied, falling peacefully asleep Tuesday November 17. Five children survive him: John of Emery, Texas; Mary A. (Mrs. R. S. Amlong) of Muscatine; Kate of New Boston, Illinois; James and Samuel who live on the homestead, seven miles southwest of Iowa City, Iowa. Buried Oakland Cemetery, Iowa City, Iowa.
