MILITARY:
1776. Frederick News. Frederick, Frederick County, Maryland. 13 June 1930.
Quoting Lewis A. Rice, president of the Frederick chapter, Sons of the American Revolution: John Shafer ..."joined the Frederick county associators, one of the first organizations formed toward arranging a government for the county. In 1776, Shafer joined the company captained by Phillip Graybill. No records can be found of this company and so the service record of Shafer is obscured by history. At the close of his term with the company, he served three other short terms, being discharged July 10, 1784. He spent the remainder of his life on a county farm and amassed quite a fortune in farms through the county, which were left to his sons and daughters. He died in 1823. Throughout his life, he was actively associated with the Reformed church and his family has been identified with it, also, the speaker said, producing many famous ministers and active workers."
