bullet  General Notes:

Christian was apparently married 4 times. His 1st wife was Mary Shoemaker whom he married in 1850 in Ashland County, Ohio. It is not known if she died or they divorced but by 1852, Christian was re-married to her sister, Elizabeth Shoemaker. Unfortunately Elizabeth died in 1873 in Eaton County, Michigan.

Christian then married in 1874 his 3rd wife, Celia Craff or Crabb supposedly from England, and who had been previously married to a Robinson. That marriage was short-lived and it is not known if she died or they divorced.

By the time of the 1880 US Census, another woman was living with Christian with what appears to be a name of Ritchey Krebs along with 3 daughters that could not have been Christian's due to their birth dates would conflict with some of Christian's children that he fathered with Elizabeth Showmaker. Her exact name on the 1880 US Census is difficult to distinguish because of the sloppy manner in which the census enumerator completed the form but other documents show that it was Lydia Elizabeth Taylor who was previously married to Abraham Ritchey. The 3 daughters with her on the 1880 US Census were from her previous marriage and erroneously have a Kreps surname instead of a Ritchey surname on the 1880 US Census. Christian and Lydia did not formally marry until 21 Aug 1900 in Eaton County, Michigan.

---------------------------------------------

Lydia was previously marriage to Abraham Ritchey. They had 3 children, Amanda, Mary Ann, and Emma.
--------------------------------------

Lydia was living with Christian at the time of the 1880 US Census but unfortunately the enumerator did a sloppy job of entering given names and surnames. Lydia's names seems to appear as "Ritchey Krebs" when it probably should have been "Lydia Ritchey", her married name from her first husband, Abraham Ritchey. She also had her 3 children with her from her first marriage, Amanda, Mary Ann, and Emma but instead of the Ritchey surname, the enumerator gave all 3 of them a Krebs surname. It appears that although Lydia and Christian were living together, they were not married at the time and the 1880 US Census form shows a blank in the column for the relationship to Christian although her marital status was strangely marked as married. Maybe she was still married to Abraham Ritchey and was awaiting the divorce action to be final.

On the 1900 US Census, Christian was listed as "C. F. Krebs" with a 59 year old wife named "Elizabeth Krebs". Some researchers want to erroneously indicate that this was Elizabeth Shoemaker but her gravestone clearly indicates that she died in 1873. In actuality is was Lydia Elizabeth Taylor, the 4th wife of Christian and she must have preferred her middle name of Elizabeth instead of Lydia. Each indicated that they had been married for 35 years which would mean they were married in 1865 which was not true. They actually never got around to getting married until 2 months after the census in August 1900.
