These records regarding her husband's estate indicate she had become insane and had been that was since 1845; Thomas Shafer was appointed her trustee.

Following her husband's death in 1853, the two daughters, Frances and Charlotte Routzahn, were living with a Matilda Alexander of unknown relationship according to the 1860 US Census. There is another 1860 US Census entry which could be Margaret Routzahn living with other families elsewhere in Middletown but the age is not exactly correct and I cannot be certain that it was the correct person. The 1860 US Census image is very faint and difficult to read but it appears that there is an entry on the line for "Margaret Routzahn" that says either Invalid or Insane.

NOTE - If her birth date was 2 Aug 1819, then her age should have been 60 instead of 62.

NOTE - I am uncertain who John and Elizabeth Shafer were. I can find no uncles of Margaret that were named John. This would have been a strange given name for an uncle considering that her father was named John. That would have meant that there were two brothers, each named John. With the age on the census being off by 2 years and the uncertainty of the uncle named John, this may not be the correct Margaret Ann Shafer.
