My mother was a very petite woman with a beautiful face and figure. She had a brand of strength that was willing to find what the other person needs and was willing to give to that person. She was self-educated as a medical assistant with on the job training at Dr. Hand's office in Caneyville, Kentucky. This was after a year teaching in a one room schoolhouse in Hardin County Kentucky. Burkhead School named for the current superintendent. I went to school the second half of that year to her as my teacher ad mother. She never forgot that she was my mother in the classroom. I am sure she would have liked to have someone to report my behavior to other than herself. After the year of teaching, we moved to Fort Knox as my father had a job with the federal government. She started another career at the American Red Cross as the distribution clerk. With the need for the army to rotate their troops to Europe, they called all of the Third Armor to Fort Knox and we lost our quarters on the post. We moved from Fort Knox in 1956. Mother who had been riding the Greyhound bus between Fort Knox and Louisville for four years now had a shorter commute. She was at the ARC from 1952-1962, when she left to work for Dr. George B. Perrine as a medical assistant downtown and in Pewee Valley.
