Carney, T. J., farmer, Section 13; Post Office Atalissa; owns 112 acres of land in this, and 120 in Adams County; born 16 Aug 1818, in Huterdon, New Jersey; parents moved to Tompkins, New York, in 1828, and came to Cleveland, Ohio, in 1833; his mother died while there; went to Coshocton, in 1835, and made his home at his uncle's; followed droving and peddling clocks for about four years; then went to Muskingum County and followed the marble business till 1854, when he came to this county. Married Isabel Williams, daughter of Col. Williams of Loudoun, Virginia, 2 Jun 1842; she was born 8 Jul 1824; have ten children living -- Jasper N., John W ., Wm. D., Frances M., Thos. J., Mary, Ann, Jane, Margaret and Belle; lost three. Member of A., F. & A. M.; Democratic.

NOTE: The year of birth for Thomas is in question. This source indicates 1818 but if one calculates his birth year based on age of 76 years at time of death, the resultant year is 1824. The 1880 Census record indicates a year of birth of about 1822.

Thomas and his wife, Isabel, share one large monument market of polished gray granite. The inscriptions are divided into two equal sides on the front of the stone. The left side reads "Isabel, wife of T. J. Carney, Died May 6, 1898, Aged 73 Ys 9 Ms 28 Ds". The right side reads "Thomas J. Carney, Died Jan. 17, 1901, Aged 76 Ys 5Ms 1Dy".
