Samuel resided in Franklin County, Illinois; White County, Illinois; Logan County, Illinois; Kansas and Nebraska. He was living in Fort Scott, Kansas in 1914.

Rev. S. R. Shull was a pastor of Eminence Church in Logan County, Illinois west of Atlanta near Ellis P. Clark Sr's farm in the area where the Clark and Houser families lived and were members. This church is a new building on the same site as the old church and Rev. Shull's picture still hangs in the church.
