John was a day laborer, or farmer so he and Julia had a tough time providing for their family. That's why so many joined the Northern armies of West Virginia in order to survive and help their parents out. John and Julia left Maryland around 1860 and lived in Hampshire County, Virginia (now West Virginia), for about 4-5 years. Julia's parents, the Arnolds, also moved to Hampshire County as well.
