bullet  General Notes:

George and Tamar lived in Brooklyn, Iowa. Occupation is what was given on the 1860 US Census for Harmony Township, Morrow County, Ohio. He was also a farmer and the 1870 US Census has him as a teamster. He had one of his legs amputated. Maude Lyman said it happened when he was 13 and working in the woods. Other family tales say that it happened when he was a teacher. He was carrying a shotgun and climbed over a fence and accidentally shot himself in the leg. Later he drank a good amount of whiskey and amputated his own leg. I heard this version from my Great Aunt Anna Norris Balfraith and Glorine Lyman Bowman Berry, his granddaughter had heard a similar version. (This came from Dorothy Davis) (per Dannell Hopkins, http://www.geocities.com/danni_74932/)
----------------------------------------

Where he was born in Knox County, Ohio later became Morrow County.
----------------------------------------

George moved to Iowa about 1864 with his family. In an accident, he had lost one leg and wore a wooden one. Among the family was the story that at age 13 while climbing over a fence he accidentally shot himself and, then or later, cut his own leg off. He had been a farmer, but the 1860 census listed him at age 20 as a school teacher and in the 1870 census he was listed as a teamster. They evidently had a hard time making a living on the Warren Township farm. Tamar helped by raising and selling garden produce. This is from Ferne Norris.
