bullet  General Notes:

A BIOGRAPHY OF JACOB FAST, by Larry Overmire (GG Grandson), Aug. 2008:

Jacob Fast was born on the family farm in Jackson Township on Feb. 12, 1821, the seventh of nine children of Martin and Catharine (Blosser) Fast. He had some education and learned the basics--reading, writing and arithmetic. He was only seventeen years old, attending a neighbor's barn raising, when his father died in an accidental fall from a tree. No doubt he helped to take over the running of the farm and provide for the family. With limited financial resources, he managed to attend Ashland Academy for one session in 1844.

On September 7, 1848, Jacob married Elizabeth Plice, the daughter of German immigrants Jacob and Mary Plice, and had four children by her: Irena T., Joseph E., Mary S., and Samuel Curtis (died in childhood).

In 1852, he was elected Township Clerk. That same year, he was elected to the first of five consecutive terms as Justice of the Peace, serving until 1870. He was re-elected in 1873 and 1875, serving a total of 24 years. A man of great integrity with a keen intellect, he would have profited by the continuance of his education if life had only dealt him a different hand. His grandson Irl Fast, in his Memoirs, commented on Jacob's tenure as Justice of the Peace: "Grandfather held trials of minor cases and examinations in his own home. Some of these trials aroused so much interest in the community that his house would be packed with people... The fact that he was re-elected by the voters who were his own neighbors is evidence that he was trusted and rendered fair decisions... If he could have pursued his education and gone to law school or gotten into a law office with a practicing attorney and studied law under him, passed the state bar examination, set up his own law office and practice, how different things would have been for him. In time he might have advanced from Justice of the Peace to common pleas judge or even higher court and thus rendered great service to the community."

In 1862, Jacob's wife Elizabeth died. While visiting relatives in Angola, Indiana, presumably his brother Christian and his family, Jacob met and later married on July 20, 1865, Melissa Burlingame, the daughter of Daniel and presumably Elizabeth (Wise) Burlingame. The Burlingames and Fasts must have been quite close. Daniel Burlingame married Jacob's sister Anna as his third wife. His son Alonzo Burlingame, Melissa's brother, married Rosanna Fast, the daughter of Jacob's brother Christian. Jacob and Melissa had two children: Elvin and Cora Edna, who died at the age of 13.

On June 6, 1883, the first known Nicklaus Fast Family Reunion took place on the Christian Fast Farm in Orange Township, Ashland County. About 1200 people came from as far away as Illinois, Michigan, and Indiana. They ate together at huge tables about 225 feet long. Judge Jacob Fast gave a speech about the Fast family history.

Jacob passed away in Ashland County, Aug. 24, 1902, at the age of 81 and was buried in Polk Cemetery.

Jacob's gravestone in Polk Cemetery is a block of dark rose colored granite with a polished vertical face and ornamentally carved top. The inscription reads "FAST - Jacob Fast Sep. 12, 1821 - Aug. 24, 1902". There is room underneath for his either one of his wife's names but nothing was ever added. His first wife died before he did but she has her own grave marker. His 2nd wife is supposedly also buried at Polk Cemetery but there is no separate marker for her.
