bullet  General Notes:

Excerpt from a book entitled "Biographical Souvenir of State of Texas - F. A. Battey & Company (1889), page 36:

" Among earliest settlers - only one settler west of them...DAVID ARNSPIGER, father, native of Jessamine County, Kentucky, was the third of eleven children, others being Samuel, Stephen, Henry, George, John, Catherine, Mary, Sallie, America and Frances. As a young man he went to Greene County, Illinois and there married Jane Lampkin, daughter of Wood Lampkin, a native of North Carolina, and early settler of Illinois. Moved to Texas in 1844, settling up 640 acres as a member of the Peters Colony, and died Sep 1870.

I have some very old correspondence from about 1975 or so from W. M. Arnspiger. It is as follows:

"David Arnspiger, being of German parentage, could speak only very broken English, according to my grandmother, Mrs. W. J. Arnspiger. Many times she said, he had difficulty making himself understood. He was a hard worker, thrifty, and a good provider for his family. He was an ardent church goer, riding a horse a distance of some 10 or 12 miles one way each Sunday morning to the nearest Baptist church in Highland. The old church has long been gone, but a fair sized cemetery surrounds the site now. David was a farmer his entire life, and died the 9th day of June 1870, at his home 3 miles southwest of Van Alstyne, Texas. He is buried beside his wife in a little country cemetery called the Alexander Cemetery, along with a number of other early pioneer settlers of this area. The cemetery is well kept by an association composed of the descendents of many of those old timers, who still live close by. Jane Arnspiger, David's wife, lived until 2 Mar 1894, outliving him by some 24 years, but never remarried. They have one granddaughter still living here in Van Alstyne, Mrs. Lee Taylor, age 92. Two other granddaughters live here also, and two grandsons. The descendents of David and Jane will be found on another page."

(Packet of information received from Gary Nees including the above excerpted letter and bio sketch.) Rec'd in early 1980's.
