Following the death of his 1st wife in 1880, Thomas remarried in 1887 to Matilda (Unknown) who was much younger than himself by 17 years. She was born in 1844 while he was born in 1827. They both appeared together in the 1900 census in Petersville, Maryland but all children had left the household by then.

Ex Sheriff THOMAS H. WILLARD, of Petersville, this county, died at the Emergency Hospital Saturday night, aged 79 years, of general debility.
He was prominent in Republican politics in this county and was elected sheriff in November 1873, and served for two years in that capacity. Shortly after retiring from the office of sheriff he went to Washington and engaged in the commission business.
He was born in the Middletown Valley and resided in Frederick County, with the exception of the two years spent in Washington, DC, all his life.
He is survived by a widow, and by four children from his first wife: Thomas Willard, Jefferson; Miss Ella Willard, Mrs. L. W. Wright and Mrs. Rose Routzahn, of Springfield, Oh. State's Attorney Arthur D. Williard and Mrs. Ida M. Markey, both of this city, are related to Mr. Willard.
