Reared on a farm as the only child of a pious family. Christmas was a religious holiday. As a father he had problems with even meager gift giving. At his wife's prodding, he accepted giving gifts of necessity, i.e., clothes, books, musical instruments, and an occasional toy. The depression hit him hard. His father sold him the farm that had been his grandfather's as a way to repay depositors of a bank in which the father was part owner. Heavily in debt, he had to borrow for planting season and hope for a harvest that would earn a living as well as pay the debts. Things got so bad that he considered suicide. His faith pulled him through.
He took a part-time job with Production Credit Association. And continued to farm. Finally took a full time job with the farmers home administration. And left the farming to his wife with hired hands. This work required him to be away from home Mon-Fri. He was a weekend farmer. In 1941, he moved the family to upper Sandusky, Ohio with the FHA. Shortly after his father died, July 1945, he sold both farms. His father's farm went to Kenneth Robertson, a long time hired hand and tenant for the family. Now with full-time commitment, he progressed to the state office of the Farmers Home Administration. And moved to Columbus, Ohio in 1951.
In 1954, he went to work for AID (Agency for International Development). His first assignment was in Cairo, Egypt. By this time, his children were reared. This was a rewarding experience in many ways. He felt that he was contributing to the betterment of the world. He was broadening himself, and he certainly had never lived better. He and his wife made many meaningful and long-lasting friendships.
In 1956, Charlie began to bleed internally. By the time he got home on leave in December he had to be hospitalized. He nearly died until the source of bleeding was located, an internal birthmark on the small intestine. An operation bypassed the area and he recovered.
The next assignment for aid was Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He and his wife spent 8 years there with month long leaves every two years. Telephone contact was very poor, so they kept close ties with the family with letters and tape recordings. The assignment required extensive travel throughout brazil. Again, it was a rewarding, contributing, learning experience. Part of the job involved sending Brazilians to the states for training in agricultural economics.
In 1964, the Currys returned to the states and made their home in Westerville near their oldest daughter, Pauline. Charlie worked with OSU coordinating the training of Brazilians with aid and evaluating the whole program. During one trip to Brazil during that period, he picked up an amoeba. By the time the parasite was diagnosed, it had invaded the body beyond treatment.
He retired in 1965 or 1966 and was never really well again. Among his retirement activities were continuing education courses at Otterbein, voluntary consulting services in credit for small businesses, and, as always, an active church life. After a steady deterioration and many hospital visits through the years. He died September 28, 1975 in Riverside Hospital, Columbus, Ohio.
His prayer: Father in heaven teach me the truth, enlighten my intellect, and show me the way. Teach me the truth that I may serve thee with wisdom. Enlighten my intellect that I may understand the truth and use it to your honor and glory. Show me the way so that my work is filling, effective, and acceptable. I ask that you teach me to trust you, increase my faith, and create in me a clean heart. I desire a realistic understanding of my fellow m an to the end that I may be useful and cooperative. May I be moved to act with judicial promptness, with unfailing courage and with vigor. Counsel, guide, and assist me to accomplish the work for which I was put on earth. May the words of wisdom be in my heart and on my lips. May your will, not mine, be done in all things. This I ask in the name of your son and our savior, Jesus Christ. (Written by daughter, Pauline Curry Bienbrech)
The times spent with our father were very special to his children. Many trips were taken over the years. These trips were mostly in connection with his work. Trips to visit production credit and farmers home administration families are especially remembered. During the summer of 1949, I went to stay with dad in Millersburg where I worked as a waitress in the hotel restaurant. Pauline and Chuck worked with dad doing farm chores while Mary Jane and June helped mother in the house. Pleasure trips in the car were adventures. We were never sure where we would end up because dad loved to take "short cuts" and explore new places.
