bullet  General Notes:

[Brøderbund WFT Vol. 1, Ed. 1, Tree #3823]
Orlando lived his whole life one mile north and one mile west of Nova, Troy Township, Ashland County, Ohio. He attended Ashland college. In adulthood, he bought the farm across the street from his father's farm. He raised a variety of animals, but his specialty was Marino sheep. He raised the grain and hay he needed and sold any not needed. The family raised much of their own food -- fruit trees, vegetable garden, chickens, hogs, cows, etc. His grandchildren remember him as a proud, hard working man who took an interest in them. He was active in the community -- the neighborhood threshing group, the local cooperative telephone company, the farm bureau, the church, etc.

He showed his sheep at the state fair. When he sold a shipment, he often traveled with it, to make sure his animals reached their destination in good condition. When the great depression hit, the bottom went out of Marino sheep and the bank in which he was part owner closed. To meet his financial obligations, he sold his father's farm which he had inherited to his son, Deward, through the federal land bank. There after, he went from specialization to general farming. He added more chickens and cows to sell eggs and milk. In 1939, he lost his wife and in 1941 his son was forced to sell his grandfather's farm to make a living in farm credit. Deward moved the family to upper Sandusky were his work was. Shortly thereafter, Orlando had surgery for prostate cancer. He recovered for a time, but was taken by the cancer in July 1945. During his last years, Zora Andrews was his housekeeper and Kenneth Robertson farmed the farm on a shares basis. Kenneth was like a second son. He came to live with the family when he was 12 years old and remained until adulthood.

Anna O. Curry..3..OH (probably should have been Amos)
(Living with parents.)

NOTE - Was his name misspelled and gender incorrect on this census? Probably, because the entry clearly shows "Anna O. Curry, Female, 3 years old (b. 1867)". There is no other entry for a son of similar age or with a name similar to or sounding like Amos. Somehow, the enumerator got the name wrong and the gender wrong.
