James was the last of nine children, and his nickname was "Pet". He was a musician. As a bachelor, he lived in the Elks Club in a small town and tuned pianos. He would always bring his violin and tune the piano when regularly visiting Matilda Daugherty's parents' home. He'd play "serious" pieces with her mother, Letha, at the piano. They liked his fiddling best when they could skip about to it.
