There appears to be no birth document showing the name of Carrie Iona Richards but there is a record of birth for an unnamed female on 12 Mar 1881 to John J. Richards and Lucinda F. Fast. There were no other females born to the parents within a year or two so logically this record would have to be the record of Carrie Iona Richards.

Only her marriage record and the 1900 US Census reference her birth year to be 1881. All other census records incorrectly reference her birth year to be 1882 as well as her gravestone. There is no birth document of a female born to the parents in 1882.

There is a birth record for an unnamed male baby born 4 Jan 1907 in Cleveland. There is also another record for an unnamed male baby born 12 Oct 1908. There is no clear indication as to which one of these was actually Oliver Wendall Chamberlain or if both records might refer to the same birth. Only the 1930 US Census provides an age of 21 for Oliver Wendall Chamberlin that matches the birth date of 12 Oct 1908. The census records of 1910 and 1920 for Oliver are inconclusive matches for either birth date.

However the 1910 US Census does indicate that his mother had given birth to 2 children and only 1 was still alive. That notation could be important because there was also another birth record for a stillborn male baby born on 9 April 1910. The date of the 1910 US Census was about 1 month after that birth date with the actual census enumeration date being 2 May 1910. If the mother was including the stillborn baby in the total of her children, then the first two birth records from 1907 and 1908 must be for the same person. But if the mother was excluding the stillborn birth of 9 April and complied with the actual guidance for the enumeration dates which stipulation the enumeration as of 1 April, then the first two birth records from 1907 and 1908 would be for 2 different persons.

The general consensus of researchers is that there were 3 separate births. The first boy born 1 Jan 1907 probably died in his infancy. The second boy born 12 October 1908 was Oliver Wendall Chamberlin. And the third boy was a documented still born birth of 9 April 1910. In total, the mother gave birth to 3 males but only 1 lived to adulthood.
