Mary married Charles Walters, son of Solomon Walters and Mary Polly Starrett, on 22 February 1859 in , Richland County, OH.^{1 2} (Charles Walters was born on 12 July 1827 in Mifflin Township, Richland County, OH ¹ and died on 20 February 1897 in , Richland County, OH ¹.)

It is not clear what happened to this family for the 1870 and 1880 US Census. By 1870, two of the youngest children were living with their maternal grandparents yet Charles and Mary had at least two additional children following the 1870 census. The son, Charles, was living with another family in Richland county as their servant at age 13. The whereabouts of the remaining three children, Margaret, Viola, and Austin, and both of the parents are not known. At least one researcher indicates that the father was apparently living in Richland county although there is no record yet found of either parent in the 1870 or 1880 US Census.
