  General Notes:

It is interesting that Joseph Travis became a doctor at about the age of 40. The 1870 US Census shows him to be a farmer but suddenly in the 1880 US Census he magically appears as a doctor. He still had a wife and around 5-6 children to feed between 1870 and 1880. I can find no record of higher educational attainment. I suspect that following the re-organization of Virginia and West Virginia after the Civil War, certain occupations may have been in great demand and there may have been little or no legal requirements to become a doctor in West Virginia at the time, something of which Joseph Travis may have taken great advantage.

Following the death of his first wife, Alcinda Fast, in 1893 Joseph Travis remarried to what appears to be "Lusetta King" (the handwriting is difficult to read on the 1900 US Census). Living with them is her father, Alpheus King at age 81 and a young niece and nephew from the King side of the family. None of the children born to Alcinda Fast remained living with Joseph Travis but his son, Joseph Jr and his family, lived next door.

It is also interesting to note that on the 1900 US Census, Joseph Travis indicated that as a Physician he remained un-employed for two months of the year.
